Reducing or Eliminating Tillage & Troutner Farms LLC

It’s no secret that mechanized modern agriculture is hard on the land. Every year millions of tons of soil is either washed or blown away due to poor practice, wind and water erosion. Seasonally soil amendments are added with loads of fertilizer with the hopes of regenerating the necessary balance of the farm for another year. We here at Troutner Farms know there is another answer. An economical, simple, sustainable, yet elegant solution to this problem.

No till Farming is the practice of growing crops from year to year without disturbing the soil through tillage. No-till is an agriculture technique which increases the amount of water that infiltrates into the soil, the soils retention of organic matter and it’s cycling of nutrients. In many agriculture regions, especially the Pacific Northwest, it is proven to reduce soil erosion, and increase the amount and variety of life in the soil system. The most powerful benefit of no-till farming is the improvement of soil fertility. It eliminates the long term need for amendments and fertilizers to the soil, reducing your fuel consumption, machinery time and labor hrs. This makes economic sense. No-till farming requires some different skills than conventional farming, as with any production system, if done incorrectly yields and profitability can drop.
